Everglades Work

Amy Welch Brill | 7/1/2004

NAPLES -- Engineers are ahead of schedule in replenishing the natural flow of water through Southern Golden Gate Estates, an undeveloped subdivision east of Naples. The project is part of the 30-year, $8-billion state-federal partnership the South Florida Water Management District is overseeing to restore the Everglades.

Engineers are now working to fill seven miles of the Prairie Canal and are removing exotic plants to speed up the return of natural vegetation there. When completed, the project will restore 50,000 acres of wetlands in the area.
